Uganda starts CHAN campaign with draw

Uganda Cranes started their 2016 CHAN tournament with a 2-2 draw against Mali Tuesday evening in Rwanda.

Cranes twice took the lead but failed to hold on for a win. Cranes goals were scored by Ssekisambu and captain Miya. (Video highlights below)

In the earlier match, Zambia went top of the group with a 1-0 win over neigbours Zimbabwe.

Uganda Cranes squandered the lead on twice as they played to a 2-2 draw with West African side, Mali in the second group D match of the CHAN 2016 championship at the Umuganda stadium in Rubavu on Tuesday evening.

In a game played under floodlights, the Cranes took the lead on 13 minutes through Erisa Ssekisambu’s well brushed header after a perfectly curled effort from team skipper Faruku Miya.


The West Africans made quick amends when Sekou Koita powerfully drilled home on the turn for the equalizer in the 10 minutes later. Miya calmly converted ............

Veteran midfielder Isaac Chansa was the hero, scoring the only goal to help Zambia to a lone goal victory over Zimbabwe in their Group D clash on Tuesday in Rubavu.

Chansa scored on 53 minutes to give the Chipolopolo a winning start to their campaign on their second appearance at the tournament designed exclusively for footballers playing in their domestic leagues.

Captain Christopher Katongo, who led Zambia to win their only Africa Cup of Nations title in 2012, brought his rich experience to bear on the team just as Chansa also a member of the victorious team.

Zimbabwe, making a record fourth appearance just as DR Congo thus failed to break the jinx of not having won an opening match at the CHAN competition.
