Six African billionaires, including Uganda's Sudhir Ruparelia, have fallen off the Forbes List of the world's richest. Africa remains with only 20 Forbes billionaires.
Sudhir however remains among Africa's top 50 richest men.
As Forbes writer Chloe Sorvino put it, "Meet some of the 2015 billionaires too poor to make the cut this year."
According to FORBES, the Commodities rout, equity-market mayhem and global economic uncertainty have all dented the wealth of a number of the world’s richest people. In the last year, 221 billionaires got knocked off the FORBES Billionaires list. "Not since 2009—when the credit crisis exiled 355 from the three-comma club—have so many gone down in one year."
Of the 221 dropoffs in 2016, many of them are gone not because their individual fortunes fell below the billion dollar mark, but because according to FORBES, their fortunes were owned by extended family members too large and disperse to be included in their ranking. Their ranking is centered around wealthy individuals.
Forbes' 2016 report states that China tops the list of the ex-billionaires with 42 drop-offs. The U.S. ranked second, with 25 new ex-billionaires. Brazil lost 23 billionaires, while 19 Russians and 15 from India got the boot from the Forbes list.
Bill Gates is still the richest person in the world with a net worth of $75 billion, but $4.2 billion poorer than a year ago. Amancio Ortega of Spain 2nd at $67 bilion while Warren Buffett is third in the world at $60billion. Amazon’s Jeff Bezos is 5th, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is number 6, all ahead of Google owners Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 12 and 13th with at 35 and 34 billion.
Africa's wealthiest man remains Aliko Dangote of Nigeria, ranked 51 in the world with $15.4 billion. Source of wealth: cement, flour, sugar, salt.
He is now followed by Mike Adenuga, another Nigerian whose net worth is estimated at $10 billion. His source of wealth: telecom, oil, real estate.
The only East African on the list, at Number 1577 in the world is Tanzania's Mohammed Dewji $1.1 billion, while Kenya and Rwanda have none.
