Taiwan's Chen wins 21st JBG Open in Entebbe

 Entebbe, Uganda | PHILLIP CORRY | “It’s the most important trophy I have won and I wanted to win it to emulate Shou Ta Wang who won this tournament in 2014,” Garret Chen said after receiving his trophy for triumphing at the 21st JBG Open Golf tournament Saturday at Entebbe Club.

 The Taiwanese investor was in fine form, returning the day's best score of 41 points to beat a record field of 246 golfers at Entebbe Club’s biggest tournament.

 On the day, he was not the only winner. Several seasoned golfers walked away with an assortment of prizes and trophies.

 JB Gauff, has been a mainstay at Entebbe Club and over the years, having provided equipment to East Africa’s oldest club and at the same time built the club’s facilities on and off the course.

 Beyond Entebbe Club,JB Gauff have also supported Toro Club.

 Baselaine gross winner

 National team golfer Joel Basalaine, was the men’s gross winner with 147 over 36 holes. 

 Uganda Professional Golfers Association secretary Phillip Kasozi, claimed his second tournament title in a space of two months by claiming the Pros category with 215 gross.
UPDF’s Geoffrey Orach was winner Group A with 37 points.

 ULGU president Eva Magala with 38pts was the ladies’ overall winner.
The senior’s Category of 55+ year olds was notched by Isaac Mariera (34 pts)

 Entebbe, Uganda | LOUIS JADWONG | Kenyan ace Dismas Indiza cemented his place in Uganda Professional Golf Open history with a record 5th title on Saturday at the Entebbe Golf Club. 

 The long-hitting Indiza bounced back from five fruitless trips to Uganda with a commanding performance at the professional category at the 2018 Castlelite Uganda Open, for his first win here since 2012.

 Known as the "Big Hitter" on the Kenyan professional circuit, he said there is no secret to his winning performance. "Practice makes perfect," he said, in a special message to the many young professional who competed against him at Entebbe's par-71 lakeside course.

 "In the week before I traveled for the Uganda Open, I had been hitting 200 balls off the range every morning before playing 36 holes. I am dedicated and winning comes as a result of practice," he said.

 If the youngsters needed a good golfing lesson, Indiza gave one in the four-day, 72 hole $50,000 event sponsored by Nile Breweries under their brand Castle Lite.

 He hit a stunning 24 birdies over the 72 holes, carding 3-under par 68 on day one and three, 6 under par 65 on day two before crowning it by playing "safe" on the final day, with a 1 over 73 that had 13 pars.

 Indiza took home sh41 million, an early birthday present as he celebrates his 50th birthday this year.

Kenyan colleague Gregg Snow came second,4 strokes back while defending champion Stephen Ferreira from Portugal recovered from a poor start to finished 7th.

 The two are fresh from another battle earlier this month in the Safari Tour Golf Series 2nd leg at Vet Lab course. 

 Muthaiga Golf Club’s Snow held his nerve to beat Indiza in a playoff to claim the top prize of sh5million. 

 Ugandans struggle

 The last Ugandans to have won in the Open were Vincent Byamukama and Deo Akope in 2013 and 2014.

 Byamukama did not even make the cut this year, while Akope finished 34th, with an 18 over par score.

 The best Ugandans this year were Denis Anguyo 4th and Robert Happy in 5th. 

US based Kitata hit a hole-in-one

Playing for pride was newly-crowned Amateur Open Champion Ronald Otile, who made the cut and was joint 17th, with a score of 294 (+10)

The event marked the climax of an amazing three weeks of Uganda Open action. Nile Breweries under their brand Castle Lite, are the anchor sponsors of the Open. Co-sponsors are Barclays Bank, Britam Insurance, CBA Africa, Kwese Sports, Ernest and Young, Minet, Gems Cambridge Int School, Nation Media Group, Kwese Sports, Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa and Time Cop.

 Action next year shifts to the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Course, Kigo.

Entebbe, Uganda | LOUIS JADWONG | Former champion Joshua Seale from South Africa carded a 73 - 2 over par - on day two but it was not enough to save him from the cut at the ongoing Uganda Professional Golf Open in Entebbe.

 Seale was the top name causality as poor scores saw the cut-off mark set at +7  at Entebbe's par-71 course - his total of 150 just one stroke off.

 Kenyan ace Dismas Indiza showed he is the man to beat, with nine birdies for a 5-under par, 65 day two score. That gave him a 36-hole total of 133, 9 under par, well ahead of second placed John Moore from Zambia, who was also outstanding with a 67, for a total of 136.

 A thrilling day-3 awaits golf fans, as five-time champion Indiza, Moore and Snow battle in the pressure group that tees off at 9.50am. 

 The day's second best score came from Zambia, a 66 from Madalitso Muthiya of Lusaka Golf club while Ugandan teenager David Kamulindwa beat the cut comfortable with (74, 75) +7. 

 Last year's champion Stephen Ferreira of Portugal beat the cut, but is well off the pace of the favourites to take the top prize. Thirty five golfers made the cut.

 Prize money for the 72-hole event is $50,000. The event marks the climax of an amazing three weeks of Uganda Open action.
