I am 19, with 31 years' experience!

Well, I thought I would keep it a secret. We planned a small family do Saturday – a day after D-Day August 25……but family and friends had other ideas. From a family photo-shoot at John Lubia’s I-Love studio, it was supposed to be a one or two hour drink and an early return home….…..well it started that way, until I was told we change tables from inside Royal Suites to outside…….And there they were waiting to burst me….. I was caught flatfooted so to say! And the conspirators? Mbidde, Kulubya, Kaggwa, Walter, Odedo; My Bako – Ronnie, Daudi and Nakke, Sylvia and Joan; My siblings - Wilbrod and Liz, John-Mary and Freda, Big Mark and Esther, Small Mark and Annette;….. and the three (5) musketeers Love Lydia, Dr Liliane, Betty as well as Judith & Allan …….mwebale nnyo for the friendship. #LouisAT50

Cranes interim coach Moses Basena has named nine of the 11 players that started against Egypt in their January AFCON encounter, on a team of 27 to prepare for a make or break double header against the same side August 31 and September 5.

Other than Geofrey Massa, who has since retired, and Tonny Mawejje, who has not played in a while, the rest of the team that started in January and most of the substitutes are on a list of 27 that Basena named in Kampala on Wednesday to prepare for their World Cup qualifier against Egypt.

At their last encounter at the African Cup of Nations in Gabon in January, Egypt’s Pharoahs piped Uganda Cranes 1-0 with a late goal.

In that game, Massa was out of sorts and was replaced by Muhammed Shaban while Mawejje dominated the midfield.

Uganda has had a good start to their World Cup qualification campaign, drawing away in Ghana and beating Congo. They will however start a game for the first time in 4 years minus coach Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevich who moved to Orlando Pirates

It will be coach Moses Basena’s 3rd game in charge, having led the Uganda Cranes to CHAN qualification.

‘I wish to thank the players, media and all the Ugandans for the support during the recently concluded successful CHAN qualification campaign. It is great that we qualified, a process that we shall build on for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Egypt’ Basena said.

On Tony Mawejje's absence, he said: " Tony is one of those very important players, but he has been out (of action) for long."

Egypt top the group with two wins, against Congo and Ghana.

Cheptegei out of Thursday's Zurich IAAF Diamond League final

Uganda’s World 10,000m silver medallist Joshua Cheptegei will not compete in Thursday’s IAAF Diamond League final in Zurich.

Cheptegei returned home from London last week, after pulling out of what would have been his second IAAF World Athletics Championships race, the 5000m.

His managers said the decision to pull out of the second race was taken because he was feeling fatigued after stretching himself in the 10,000m, and that he had also not recovered from injuries suffered after being spiked in the race won by Mo Farah.

Indications are that Team-Cheptegei have now opted for a longer break from the track after his full recovery from March’s World Cross Country Championships collapse. Ugandan athletics official Godfrey Nuwagaba confirmed Cheptegei will not travel to Zurich.

Cheptegei, who had qualified for the Zurich race last month, is not on the entry list for Wednesday’s epic Diamond League final that will feature British athletics legend Mo Farah, and his 5000m conqueror Ethiopian Muktar Edris.

Mo Farah narrowly failed to complete a fifth successive global double in London but will get a chance to get his revenge in his final track race.

Cheptegei is one of 12 athletes that had qualified for the final in Zurich according to the series’ new system through which the best competitors of the IAAF Diamond League season qualify for the event finals.  He had made his start to the track season by finishing 4th in the 5000m in Ougene in May, before a 4th place finish (3000m) in Paris July 1 and 3rd place finish at the Lausanne Diamond League July 7.

The finalists will be competing for a share of $100,000 in prize money in each of the 16 events held in Zurich, with the winners of each final awarded $50,000.

In Zurich, Farah will run his final track race before moving on to the roads and longer distances.

Letzigrund Stadium is a worthy arena for Farah's final bow to cap an impressive track career. Zurich is where Farah broke the 13-minute barrier for the first time in 2010, and it is where he was crowned double European champion in 2014.

His final track appearance, over the 5000m distance, could quite possibly come with an IAAF Diamond League title.

The London 5000m final:
1. Mukhtar Edris (ETH) 13min 32.79sec
2. Mohamed Farah (GBR) 13:33.22
3. Paul Chelimo (USA) 13:33.30

STEEPLECAHSE RACE PREVIEW
Steeplechasers Jacob Araptany and Albert Chemutai will carry the Ugandan flag in today's World Athletics Championship 3000m SC final (11.00pm).

It will be the fourth time Ugandan men are in a World Championship Steeplechase final, with Jacob Araptany having featured in three of them, in 2011, 2013 and now 2017.

The two will however be outsiders in the final, having only qualified as the fastest losers in the heats.

Uganda's greatest steeplechase moment came 12 years ago, when Dorcus 'Inzzi' Inzikuru stunned the world to win the Helsinki 2005 women's steeplechase final.

The date? By some coincidence, August 8. August 8, 2015 was the day Inzikuru did it!
