Ugandan women DJs amaze visiting Germans

Kampala, Uganda | LOUIS JADWONG | German DJ Sarah Farina and Producer Yo van Lenz are amazed at the local talent they have found in Kampala.

They have resolved to create bridges between German Djs and Ugandan ones, and to assist grow talent, and also offer support in acquiring modern equipment. 

Farina and Lenz starred at the climax of the Mirembe Rhythm concert, dance party and workshop last weekend. They are on a Sub- Saharan African tour.

“I loved the concert and was amazed by all the talented DJs. At the workshop, all the girls were super interested in the productions, which was cool and made me happy. I love sharing knowledge, therefore when it’s well received it’s even more fun. It was nice warm energy and good vibes," said Berlin based music producer Yo Van Lenz.

Farina was also excited. “We are very grateful that we have the opportunity to be here and connect with something that we love, which is music, and so playing the show with the Ugandan DJs was very nice. We discovered some really talented DJs and we have connected with them already," she said.

"We definitely want to keep building; this will not be a one time thing. We have got all the contacts and will definitely keep in touch with the people and build bridges between Europe and Africa. We shall exchange, collaborate and support if we can in some way," she promised. 

"Being a DJ here, it can be hard to get equipment, so we are happy if we can make connections for those people who are interested so that they can get all the stuff they need in order to become the person they want to be." 

GZK initiative

Goethe-Zentrum Kampala (GZK), aka the Ugandan German Cultural Society, hosted 
DJ Farina and Producer Lenz. In partnership with Ugandan DJ Rachael’s Femme Electronic, GZK organized a workshop for young women in Uganda to learn about DJing and music production, and also put up the Mirembe Rhythm DJ dance party on 12th October at The Square in Kampala’s industrial area.  

The Mirembe Rhythm concert and dance party was headlined by the Germans alongside Kampala’s crème de la crème of electronic, dancehall and hiphop music: DJ Rachael, DJ Ciza, The Control Posse, Hakuna Kulala and Catu Diosis. 

The Square put on a show as Uganda’s celebrated set designer Mirembe Musisi created an Afroparty themed interactive play space for Kampala revellers. The décor used natural materials to make woven light fixtures and other unique designs that made the party feel especially unique.  

The event kicked off as early as 6pm with board games from Creative Minds, a drum circle by Ngoma Jam Session and some face painting by Marjorie. Gloria Kiconco, the event MC, officially welcomed the first DJ on the lineup at 9pm – and the music played late into the night with a diverse and freedom-loving crowd enjoying themselves into the morning hours. 

The next day, Goethe Zentrum Kampala held a panel discussion about women in the Electronic Dance Music in Uganda, and then on Sunday offered a free DJing workshop for Ugandan women.  

Farina revealed that they had made music with some artists. 

"At the workshop, it was very touching for me especially to have the opportunity to empower other females with DJing and music production skills. It’s just healing and such a valuable experience to create something together and to share knowledge." 

GZK says trip great boost for Ugandan women Djs

GZK’s new Director, Barbara Sommer, said of the aim of the event: “ Given that one of the German DJs was female, and connecting to the established relationship between GZK and Femme Electronic and DJ Rachael, we decided to give especially women the opportunity to learn more about DJing in a workshop."

"The creative atmosphere in this special workshop gave women in Uganda who want to be DJs a platform to connect to each other and create a network of mutual support. Sarah Farina and DJ Rachael, the two female workshop instructors, acted in this context as role models for the participants and shared their knowledge with the future DJs.”

Barbara went on to speak of what she felt was achieved in the line up of events. 

“After having enjoyed a great party at The Square on Friday, October 12th, with fascinating DJs from Uganda and the two DJs from Berlin from dawn to sunrise, the good vibes of Mirembe Rhythm still continued the whole weekend manifesting themselves in the interesting panel discussion on Saturday and the creative workshop on Sunday." 

"At the panel discussion with the female DJ from Berlin, DJ Rachael and The Cee, views were exchanged about female DJing in Uganda, electronic music in Uganda and why each of them became a DJ and what visions they have for the future.”  

Shaniqua Packruhn, another member of the organizing team at Goethe-Zentrum Kampala, added: “At the German-Ugandan Cultural Society, we see it as our mission to promote inter-cultural exchange and support creative processes. In the course of this, Mirembe Rhythm was an excellent opportunity to offer young women a platform for creative exchange and to build sustainable networks."  

She said the DJ/ Music Production Workshop as well as the panel discussion‚  ‘Pushing Boundaries - Women in the electronic Music business‚’ turned out to be a great success regarding our goal to empower young artists and strengthen creative dynamics.

"DJ Rachael, Sarah Farina and Yo Van Lenz provided our workshop participants with their broad knowledge about DJing and Music Production and created a space for them to learn from each other and grow. After the workshop, everybody was excited to stay in touch and build on what they’ve taken away from the day.” 

Dj Rachael - This is a first of its kind

 Dj Rachael, one of Kampala’s most prominent DJs and proprietor of Femme Electronic (which partnered with GZK to put the events together), was delighted by the success of the dance party, panel discussion and the ladies’ DJing and music production workshop. 

“This was the first of its kind. I think it was a great party that brought together different cultures, from Germany, Uganda, Kenya and Congo. Everyone had a good vibe and the party was really great," she said. 

"The Femme Electronic workshop with Sarah Farina and Yo van Lenz and myself at GZK was amazing: the turn up was good, and the reception from the girls that attended was really cool as they were all very willing to learn and go the distance. I’m sure they will elevate Femme Electronic to another level. We shall continue training them and create a new era of female DJs.” 

These events were part of an annual cultural exchange, as each year GZK hosts German touring artists in Uganda for performances, workshops and collaborations with Ugandan artists. Maseru, Lesotho | FUFA.CO.UG | Farouk Miya scored a brace as Uganda Cranes out-muscled Lesotho Likuena (The Crocodiles) 2-0 at the Setsoto stadium in Maseru Stadium on Tuesday night.

Miya opened the scoring as early as the 5th minute with a thunderous shot after good inter-play with Allan Kateregga and Emmanuel Okwi off the right flank.

The Croatian based forward playing alongside KCCA’s Patrick Henry Kaddu added the second in the 36th minute with a superbly taken free-kick after a foul on Okwi on the left flank.

Half time ended with Uganda carrying a 2-0 goal cushion and it necessitated gallant defending from the visitors as Lesotho surged forward for at least a goal back.

Goalkeeper Dennis Onyango and the entire defence had to be alert throughout the second half with explicit defending.

In the second half, the technical team headed by Sebastien Desabre rung a couple of changes which witnessed  left winger Allan Kateregga paving way for Egyptian based Isaac Muleme.

Two goal hero Miya who had been booked was replaced by Moses Waiswa and industrious Patrick Henry Kaddu was rested for Edirsa Lubega. It was KCCA FC striker Patrick Kaddu's first start on the National senior team

Uganda is now on the brink of are within a point of qualification for the 2019 AFCON finals with the last two matches against Cape Verde (home) and Tanzania (away).

A large fraction of Ugandans who traveled by the chartered flight from Entebbe and those living in Lesotho cheered the Cranes from start to finish.

Just last Saturday, Uganda Cranes beat Lesotho 3-0 at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.


A chartered flight facilitated by the Government of Uganda enabled the team reach Maseru on Sunday well in time of the Tuesday game.

Govt cancels daily levies on all Public Service Vehicles

Kampala, Uganda | Government has cancelled daily levies on all Public Service Vehicles and ordered a stop to the use of agents in the collection of park user fees from taxi operators.

All PSVs will now make a single annual E-payment of sh720,000 and sh840,000 for taxis, and sh2.4 million for buses, annually.

According to Minister of State for Local Government Jennifer Namuyangu, Cabinet made the decision on Monday October 15, where they approved the levying and collection of Park User fees on Passenger Service Vehicles (PSV).

Issues of taxes have been a bone of contention with regular on and off taxi operators’ strikes. KCCA' decision to raise taxes last year was halted by President Museveni. The president issued a directive that all daily and monthly taxi levies be stopped.

KCCA had raised taxes to sh120,000 monthly at one time.


The decision comes hours after Executive Director  Jennifer Musisi handed in her resignation. 

She had in July also just sealed a deal with the Netherlands Ambassador to Uganda Henk Jan Bakker for a grant to the tune of sh4.3 Billion to redevelop Old Taxi Park.

CABINET DECISION DETAILS

(i) Each taxi shall pay Ugx.840,000/= per annum to be shared between the origin/destination Local Government and KCCA at a ratio of 40:60 respectively;

(ii) Taxis operating between two Urban Authorities shall pay Ugx.840,000/= per annum which shall be shared in a ratio of 60:40 for origin-loading and destination respectively;

(iii) Commuter taxis in Kampala to pay Ugx.720,000/= per annum; and 

(iv) Buses to pay Ugx.2,400,000/= per annum which shall be shared equally among all the Urban Authorities on the Route Charts.

The purpose of the above levy is:

(i) To harmonize the tax system of Kampala Capital City Authority and other Local Governments;

(ii) To stop multiple taxation and daily levies on taxis (Public Service Vehicles) and provide for a single annual payment; and

(iii) To stop the use of Agents in the collection of Park user fees from taxi operators.

Kampala, Uganda | PHILLIP CORRY | Namulonge golfers showed their mantle on the course as the 1st leg of the Tusker Malt Golf Series teed off on October 12th at the Uganda Golf Club.

Namulonge's Denmond Mutyaba and UGC's Jerry Owachi were the first to qualify for the grand final next year with a total of 46 stable-ford points.

The 2nd and third runners up slots were won by Namulonge golfers Andrew Atuhaire and Tom Kakaire with 45 points on count back, while Paul Ndyaguma and Moses Mukiibi had 45 points.

The Uganda Breweries sponsored golf series will run for 17 weeks, with 7 events around 6 different courses across the country. The overall winners will win an all-expense paid trip to Pattaya, Thailand next year.

The next tour on the Series is Toro Club from November 10th.

Entebbe, Uganda | PHILLIP CORRY | “It’s the most important trophy I have won and I wanted to win it to emulate Shou Ta Wang who won this tournament in 2014,” Garret Chen said after receiving his trophy for triumphing at the 21st JBG Open Golf tournament Saturday at Entebbe Club.

The Taiwanese investor was in fine form, returning the day's best score of 41 points to beat a record field of 246 golfers at Entebbe Club’s biggest tournament.

On the day, he was not the only winner. Several seasoned golfers walked away with an assortment of prizes and trophies.

JB Gauff, has been a mainstay at Entebbe Club and over the years, having provided equipment to East Africa’s oldest club and at the same time built the club’s facilities on and off the course.

Beyond Entebbe Club,JB Gauff have also supported Toro Club.

Top German, Ugandan DJs ready for Mirembe Rhythm Dance Party

Kampala, Uganda | ENTERTAINMENT | The German Cultural Society, Kampala this week hosts “Mirembe Rhythm” a unifying dance party offering a music mix, especially featuring Electronic Dance Music (EDM) and female DJs centre stage.

Palm Valley | LOUIS JADWONG | Becca Mwanja carded 41 points and Fred Wanzala played mesmerizing golf as they retained their Pepsi Independence Golf Open titles on Tuesday.

Mwanja topped the men's category in the main event at the Palm Valley 9-hole Golf and Country Club, with Martha Babirye's 33 points outstanding in the women's contest. It is Babirye's first win at the annual Independence Open played at the course in Akright Kakungulu estate.

Wanzala secured the top prize in the professional golfers sh30million category, beating his nearest challenger by an astonishing 16 strokes over 54 holes. He ended the day with a 9-under par score.

The Serena Pro hit an astonishing 65 (7-under par) in the final 18 holes to destroy the field. "This time I didn't take chances. Since last week at the Johnnie Walker Open a 4 stroke lead going into the final day wasn't enough to secure victory for me, I said this time it will be at least 7 strokes going into the final 18 holes," said Wanzala, about his winning margin.

The winners received a variety of prizes at a colourful ceremony attended by former ministers Jim Muhwezi, John Nassasira and current Minister in charge of Karamoja Affairs John Byabagambi, officials from tournament sponsors, including Maggie Kigozi of Crown Beverages.

Crown Beverages Board Chairman Amos Nzeyi said the over 200 golfers who competed was testimony to the growing popularity of the Independence Day Open, that they are sponsoring for a 9th straight year.

Crown Beverages are the main sponsors, supported by ICEA, Stanbic Bank, Sheraton Hotel and Mukwano Industries. The partners put up a total sh100m to organise this year's edition, the pro and amateur main event.

Palm Valley | LOUIS JADWONG | Professional golfer Fred Wanzala bounced back from last week's painful defeat on the final day of the Lake Victoria Serena Johnnie Walker Open with a convincing victory in the annual Pepsi Independence Golf tournament on Monday. 

The Serena Pro hit an astonishing 65 (7-under par) in the final 18 holes to destroy the field, winning by 16 strokes over three rounds at the new Palm Valley 9-hole Golf and Country Club Course at Akright Kakungulu estate, on Entebbe road. It is his first win this season.


"This time I didn't take chances. Since last week a 4 stroke lead going into the final day wasn't enough to secure victory, I said it this time it will be at least 7 strokes this time," said Wanzala, about his winning margin.

The sh32m professional category of the Pepsi Independence tournament is the first half of the sponsorship from Crown Beverages, ICEA, Stanbic Bank, Sheraton Hotel and Mukwano Industries. The partners have put up a total sh100m to organise this year's edition, the pro and amateur main event.

Action continues on Tuesday with the main event, the amateur Pepsi Independence Golf tournament, that has attracted over 200 golfers.

Kigo, Uganda | LOUIS JADWONG | Handicap 14 golfer Jadu Patel beat a strong field to win the Inaugural Lake Victoria Serena Johnnie Walker Open 2018 with a score of 43 stableford points on Saturday.

Uganda Golf Club (UGC) Kampala golfers dominated the top prizes as 220 golfers battled at the picturesque Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa course. Chief guest at the prize giving was Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda.

Jadu was on familiar territory as he also holds membership at Serena Club, and has participated in nearly all warm-up tournaments at the new course. He has in the past two years come second best at the captain's and club members tournaments.

The one-day 18-hole contest was the climax of the Serena Johnnie Walker Golf Open after four days of golf that started with a professionals 54-hole-contest. Phillip Kasozi came from four strokes behind favourite Fred Wanzala to win the professional category on Friday. (full story)

Tournament focus now turns to the Pepsi Independence Open at the nine-hole Palm Valley country and golf club course, located in the tranquil Akright Kakungulu Housing Estate, off Kampala – Entebbe Highway.

It starts with a professional contest today and tomorrow, before the main contest on Independence Day.

A history of Serena Golf Resort & Spa

Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa, located to the south of Kampala in Uganda, just recently completed a second nine holes on its golf course designed by Kevin Ramsey of Golfplan, reports golfcoursearchitecture.net.

The resort began working with Golfplan in 2008, with construction of the first nine holes beginning at the end of 2009. Work on the second nine began in 2016 and will officially be opened at this inaugural Serena Johnnie Walker Golf Open Championship.

“The holes that were completed in the first phase were a mix of front and back nine holes,” said Ramsey in an interview with golfcoursearchitecture.net

The 18th hole at the par 72 Kigo golf course.

He told golfcoursearchitecture.net that “There is no difference in style, we are just pushing on to the far end of the site. The key feature of the entire site is the proximity and view to Lake Victoria. Visible on all holes and in play on three including both finishing holes."

Ramsey, who was one of several guests at the launch on Saturday, says the course is a unique gem.

“This is a very unique one-of-a-kind golf facility in the sense that access to the marina is between the ninth and eighteenth holes. I can’t think of anywhere in the world where I have seen anything like this. The course is very natural in its feel and meanders through the site and down to the papyrus groves on the lake."

According to golfcoursearchitecture.net , the resort is owned and has been developed by Kenyan-based contracting company Cementers, and of its CEO, Kartick Halai.

“The Lake Victoria Serena golf course is one of the most beautiful courses in the region, we could not be prouder to have it on our property and simply cannot wait to be positioned as the best golf and spa resort in Africa,” Anthony Chege, general manager of Serena Hotels Uganda, told golfcoursearchitecture.net

“There really is nothing like it. Serene and peaceful,” concluded Ramsey.
