Entebbe, Uganda | LOUIS JADWONG | When the Uganda Professional Golf Open was last held at the Entebbe course five years ago, a Ugandan Vincent Byamukama won while Kenya's Dismas Indiza could only manage fifth position.
A lot has changed since, with Ugandans nowhere near winning for a fourth straight Open while the experienced big hitter from Kenya, Indiza,49, is the man to beat - for a record 5th title.
Long-hitting Indiza has dominated this Professional Open from day one, where his three under par 68 set the tone for a 5 stroke lead going into the final day. His opening round, was followed by a stunning 65 on day two, then a 68 on Friday as he raced to 12 under par.
It will require a spectacular collapse by one of Kenya's most consistent professionals for the chasing pack of Gregg Snow (Muthaiga club, Kenya), who is 5 strokes behind, and Lusaka Club's Muthiya Madalitso, 7 strokes behind, for an upset on the final day.
If Indiza returns another under-par score, like he has done in each of the rounds so far, he will be crowned champion this evening - his first title since he last won six years ago, and an early 50th birthday present (B. Dec 8, 1968).
After an early start Saturday in the subsidiary event, the professionals tee off at 11.20am (see draw below), before the pressure group of Indiza, Snow and former champion Madalitso who has bounced back with two 66s, take off at 1.10pm.
Prize money for the 72-hole event is $50,000. The event marks the climax of an amazing three weeks of Uganda Open action.
Playing for pride is newly-crowned Amateur Open Champion Ronald Otile, who made the cut and is tied 16th, with a score of 220 (7+)
