Entebbe, Uganda | LOUIS JADWONG | A quick look at the day one results leaves one feeling most of the golfers were pacing themselves when the professional contest of the Uganda Golf Open got underway in Entebbe on Wednesday.

Only nine golfers beat the course par 71 as 93 professionals battled for glory in the 72-hole $50,000 tournament. The event marks the climax of an amazing three weeks of Uganda Open action.

US-based Ugandan pro Willy Deus Kitata's hole-in-one on par-3 Hole No.10 was one of the highlights as Kenyans set the pace on day one. Kitata is tied in 5th position with 1-under 70.

Leading the pack is last year's runner-up Dismas Indiza from Kenya with 3 under, 68 strokes while last year's champion Stephen Ferreira of Portugal is 2 over par. Farther back is 2016 champion South African Joshua Seale is 6 over.

The cut at the end of day two is projected to be +4, for the final 30 players to battle for honours in the final two days. This does not include the amateurs.
The other highlight was from the youngest professional playing at the Open David Kamulindwa. The teenager, another from the golf nursery that Tooro Club has become, shot a 3 over par 74.

The amateurs

Playing for pride are a group of amateurs led by Open Champion Ronald Otile, who is within striking distance at 2 over par.

Nile Breweries under their brand Castle Lite, are the anchor sponsors of the Open. Co-sponsors are Barclays Bank, Britam Insurance, CBA Africa, Kwese Sports, Ernest and Young, Minet, Gems Cambridge Int School, Nation Media Group, Kwese Sports, Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa and Time Cop.
